TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS

1. MY LIFE IS LIKELY TO LAST 10 TO 15 YEARS. ANY SEPARATION FROM YOU WILL BE VERY PAINFUL.

2. GIVE ME TIME TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU WANT.

3. PLACE YOUR TRUST IN ME - IT IS CRUCIAL FOR MY WELL-BEING.

4. DON'T BE ANGRY WITH ME FOR LONG AND DON'T LOCK ME UP AS PUNISHMENT. YOU HAVE YOUR WORK, YOUR FRIENDS, YOUR ENTERTAINMENT. I HAVE ONLY YOU !!!

5. TALK TO ME. EVEN IF I DON'T UNDERSTAND YOUR WORDS, I DO UNDERSTAND YOUR VOICE WHEN IT'S SPEAKING TO ME.

6. BE AWARE THAT HOWEVER YOU TREAT ME, I'LL NEVER FORGET IT.

7. BEFORE YOU HIT ME, REMEMBER THAT I HAVE TEETH THAT COULD EASILY CRUSH THE BONES IN YOUR HAND, BUT I CHOOSE NOT TO BITE YOU.

8. BEFORE YOU SCOLD ME FOR BEING LAZY OR UN-COOPERATIVE, ASK YOURSELF IF SOMETHING MIGHT BE BOTHERING ME. PERHAPS I'M NOT GETTING THE RIGHT FOOD, I'VE BEEN OUT IN THE SUN TOO LONG OR MY HEART MAY BE GETTING OLD AND WEAK.

9. TAKE CARE OF ME WHEN I GET OLD. YOU TOO, WILL GROW OLD.

10. GO WITH ME ON DIFFICULT JOURNEYS. NEVER SAY, "I CAN'T BEAR TO WATCH IT" OR "LET IT HAPPEN IN MY ABSENCE". EVERYTHING IS EASIER FOR ME IF YOU ARE THERE. REMEMBER, I LOVE YOU !!!

ARTICLES & PET STORIES

The sun is shining, the sky is blue and the weather could not be more perfect. On goes the coffee maker and directly at your feet, Fido looks directly into your eyes. He whimpers at your every move and you know exactly what he's saying: "Mom, let's go!".

So you hurry through your breakfast and morning cup of coffee as your trying to decide what exactly you and your Best Friend should be doing today. Maybe we could do it all...A bike ride to the park, then a walk through the woods, a dip in the lake, perhaps even a 2 km swim together to cool things down.

Then you could have some lunch, (don't forget to pack his) and once finished a few moments dedicated to the sun would be most appropriate. Of course the chance that he would be at your side for this activity is doubtful, so make sure it's beside a willow tree providing the cool shade your pal likes best. By now it's almost a perfect day but you decide roller-blading must be included, just to reach super 'Jockdom'. So you find a way to attach those to your bike too.

Now that all is planned you throw your gear on and his (leash, saddle-bags and shoes), grab the keys, wallet, sunglasses, water for two, enough poop-scoop bags and basically everything you can fit in either hand or pocket and off you both go.

There could be nothing better than spending a day or sharing your favorite activities with your favorite friend. The two of you together, sharing the most precious gift given to this earth - nature and the synergy between person and animal. The simplicity of thought, the space and dynamics developed and offered to each others presence and the rhythm in movement when you see him in action by your side. This must be one of the most peaceful and uplifting moments experienced in life. That two creatures so very different can need and desire and enjoy the very same things in life. But just like humans, exercise must be introduced gradually and just like us, these creatures must be properly protected against the terrain and surfaces which would injure the strongest human. This has become an owners responsibility and there should be absolutely no excuse for not giving our pets the protection they deserve.

All too many times we hear of the older dogs suffering from arthritis, hip-dysplasia and weak muscles causing dragging paws. Contrary to popular belief, a dogs paws are one of the most sensitive areas of its body. It's where they transpire from, therefore the open pores is the primo place for picking up dirt and bacteria which by the way gets brought into your home and spread everywhere. Not to mention the countless times they get injured from either cut glass, burning cigarettes, rusted nails, bottle caps, sharp metal objects, ice...need I continue? We thought that dogs paws were strong enough to bear anything, but now we're starting to realize that through the countless injuries which occur to them, they cannot. Nor can we afford to allow these seemingly innocent, injuries be liable in the development of certain major, pain-staking maladies occurring in their later years.

Many people question why a dog would need paw protection? Since animals were given what they 'naturally' need to exist in the wild...after all, an animal doesn't need to evolve like a human being, does it? Well first of all dogs are no longer in their natural environment. Like us they have been re-planted in a society with concrete and other unnatural debris.  However it is certain that even in nature there could be many hazards to them, such as burs, thorns, broken branches and sharp rocks. Not unlike us, they require tools and instruments which aid in their safety and well-being. Imagine, your feet pounding against the pavement, hardening, your muscles smashing against each other, your joints without the proper support and shock absorption! This repeatedly would cripple our race and cause havoc. Of course we would prefer to be barefoot, but we cannot afford to be and neither can they.

We're not suggesting that our best friend's should accompany us to the dinner table in formal wear, but when they are participating in our activities, they also need to be protected.
